Honorary Chief
MICHAEL O'GARA
(Term November 2002 -Nov. 2003)

Michael was born in Ballymoe, Co. Galway shortly after which the family moved to Tuam where he received his primary and secondary school education. His father Andrew, a native of Tivanagh, Boyle Co. Roscommon, was a member of the Garda Siochana from 1922. His mother, Kathleen was a daughter of Michael Wynne, Cloonacool, Co. Sligo. Michael has two brothersand two sisters. His great-great grandfather Patrick Gara, was born in Cuppanagh, Cloonloo, Co. Sligo about 1787 , but moved a short distance across the border to Derrymaquirk, Co. Roscommon in 1812. Patrick his wife and many of their descendants are buried in Templeronan graveyard, Cuppanagh, on the shores of Lough Gara. Michael is married to Marie McHugh, they have four daughters and a number of grandchildren.
Due to the nature of his work as a Quantity Surveyor, Michael moved around quite a bit, spending some years in Galway, England, Dublin, Cork, Limerick, Headford and finally Tuam where he now lives in semi-retirement in the family home.
Michael has a very keen interest in all sports particularly horse racing and breeding, golf and fishing while keeping a keen eye on handball, snooker and football which he played in the past. He regularly plays bridge and one of his favourite pastimes is a good session of music and song. No family gathering is complete without Michael's vocal contribution from his varied repertoire of songs, some of which he has shared with O'Gara Clan members on special occasions.
During his term of office as Honorary Chieftain, Michael's real desire would be to develop the idea of having Moygara Castle preserved and recognised as
a monument to the O'Gara Clan.
