O'GARA DNA TRINITY COLLEGE project

~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
A COMMERCIAL DNA PROJECT
Joseph O'Gara lives in London and has taken a keen interest in the origins of his surname for many years. His father came from Glencolmcille, Co. Donegal. Shortly before our clan got involved with the Trinity College project, Joseph was contacted by a professional family history company, who suggested that he might wish to extend his research into the area of DNA testing. The company informed him that Family Tree had recently started Y -Chromosome testing. This DNA is of value only if the results are compared with others bearing the same surname. Joseph has undertaken the position of Group Leader which reduces the cost for volunteers and to date eleven O'Gara men have taken the test. Five of the volunteers including four from the U.S. had not taken part in the Trinity project which was confined to O'Gara men living in Ireland or whose father had been born here. As Trinity college were not allowed to give any individual results due to the confidentiality clause, some more O'Gara men may be interested in taking the commercial test. The overall cost for those applying through the Group Project leader is $173 for a 25 marker test or $110 for a 12 marker test.
' Irish Origins: the genetic History and Geography of Ireland'
A presentation by Brian McEvoy, Dept. of Genetics, Trinity College, on the O'Gara
results in above project was well attended on Sunday, October 20 at O'Gara's Hotel, The
Royal, Roscommon. Brian displayed the overall results on a screen and gave an
excellent explanation of the project. Afterwards O'Garas from Donegal, Mayo,
Roscommon and Sligo chatted over refreshments. The O'Gara family, owners of the
Royal Hotel, generously made their comfortable facilities available free of charge for
the occasion. The O'Gara Clan committee wish to express their thanks to all who
contributed to making this a very special gathering.
